Administrivia email ----- * ACTUAL EMAIL AWARDS TEXT Christopher forwarded to NewtNews more information about the EMMSy Electronic Mail Industry Awards that was mentioned in the last NewtNews. Here are the exact paragraphs about the Newton and General Magic (this information is Copyright 1995 PR Newswire Association): "Winning as the 'Messaging Event of the Year' is the launch of the General Magic and AT&T alliance. The alliance featured the debut of the AT&T PersonaLink Services and the Sony Magic Link personal intelligent communicator. AT&T PersonaLink Services uses General Magic's Telescript technology, and the Sony Magic Link personal communicator uses General Magic's Magic Cap software." "The Apple Newton MessagePad won the 'Messaging Hardware of the Year' award. Re-introduced in 1994, The Apple Newton MessagePad is a hand-held communications device that provides personal communications, wireless messaging and wireless fax. Apple Computer Inc. is based in Cupertino, Calif. The MessagePad won an EMMSy last year in the same category." * HEAP HOGS FIXED! After getting mentioned in a "Top 10 Heap Hungry Apps" discussion on the USENET newsgroup comp.sys.newton.misc, SleepAid and GraffitiPatch have gone on a diet. SleepAid now uses a maximum of 3.5k when installed internally and 3.9k when installed on the card (it previously used about 6.0k). A bug in GraffitiPatch sometimes caused it to eat 7k of heap. After removing the bug, it should stay at around 1k of heap. Both packages are now at v1.3. Both are shareware, SleepAid is $5 and GraffitiPatch is $10. Registered users of previous versions are automatically registered for this release. Contact for more information. * NEW VERSION OF POCKETMONEY Version 1.4 has been released of PocketMoney. PocketMoney is the premiere personal financial shareware package for the Newton. The new version improves the ability of other applications to share data with PocketMoney. The following programs all support sharing data with PocketMoney via the PM-Financial Posting Standard. CheckPlease 2.0.pkg will figure your tip and then add the withdrawal transaction to PocketMoney. QuickPocket.pkg is a quick entry form so that PM doesn't need to be launched every time to quickly jot down little transactions. EP-FPS.pkg is a patch that allows ExpensePlus to share data with PocketMoney. Bills To Pay 2.0 fully supports PM giving users the ability to track upcoming bills and allows alarms to be set. MPG 2.2 has supported since version 1.3 and continues to share auto expense transactions with PocketMoney. PocketMoney can import from and export to Quicken and other desktop financial programs. For more information contact: Hardy Macia . * NEWTON OS 2.0 Rumor has it that Apple has not yet finished the APIs for NewtonOS 2.0, and that is causing some major development problems for many software and hardware venders. * SFNUG MEETING MINUTES FOR 3-8-95 The South Florida Newton Users Group (SFNUG) met on March 8, 1995 at 6:30pm, in Boynton Beach, Florida. Here is a cut-n-paste quoting of information that was especially interesting: "Several members of the SFNUG have sold their previous Newton-based devices in favor of the MP120. The general consensus is that the MP120 is an all-around improvement over the Original MessagePad (OMP) but only a minor improvement over of the MP110. The extra 1MB of RAM is definitely appreciated, and the new location of the PCMCIA card lock switch is helpful. So far we are averaging about 1.5-weeks of normal usage on the Apple Rechargeable Battery Pack." "Review of 'Great Meetings.' GM is an all encompassing program for setting up, running, and recapping meetings. It's a huge program, occupying about 500K of storage space, and requires a huge amount of heap space too-normally forcing a soft-reset prior to running. If you conduct meetings on a regular basis, and have the storage and heap space available to run the program, Great Meetings can help keep your meetings on-track and running smoothly. There is even an easy way to send (via fax, e-mail, or printout) either the agenda or minutes of the meeting to all attendees very easily." "The ARM 710 (new chip to replace the ARM 610 in the current Newtons) doubles the cache size from 4KB to 8KB, increased the maximum clock frequency, improved the write buffer, and enlarged the Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) in the MMU." The SFNUG meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Unless otherwise specified, the meetings are in Boynton Beach, Florida at 6:30pm. Please contact Matthew Hart (matt5115@gate.net) or Scott Leapman (scott_leapman@ bocaraton.ibm.com) for more information. The Executive Entrepreneur Program (EEP) is for seasoned managers who wish to buy or build a business to which they will bring some degree of innovation. The purpose of the program is to foster economic development by means of creating new jobs in small to medium high-growth innovative companies. Studies prove that each new high-growth business start-up or acquisition and turn-around creates 30-35 new jobs directly - and four times that many indirectly. There is no charge for the program and financing sources are available for the equity and debt financing of the acquisitions and/or start ups. Although the EEP program is presently limited to Southern California, it is looking to expand nationally in the near future. The key is that there is now 20+ folders that better organize all the Newton software (1500 files, which is over 126 megs!) that is out there. You can gain access by using the following URL: . There are also two mirrors at: radon.sys.uea.ac.uk and dec59.ruk.cuni.cz. AMUG's only problem is not allowing over 12 anonymous users on at any one time. If you get a "busy" signal, please try later, or check a mirror. Edupage 3/5/95 thru 3/9/95 -------------------------- * WIRELESS EQUIPMENT PURCHASE In a move that will play a part in the battle of competing standards for wireless equipment, Washington-area American Personal Communications (APC) is making a $60 million equipment purchase from Sweden's Telefon L.M. Erickson and Canada's Northern Telecom. APC, in which Sprint and three cable-company partners recently acquired a 49% interest, was awarded one of the FCC's "pioneer preference" licenses allowing it to offer personal communications services sooner than some larger competitors. (Wall Street Journal 3/3/95 B6) * A FAX IN YOUR POCKET A pocket-size fax viewer lets you read faxes from anywhere you can be reached by phone. By peering into its one-inch window, you can read your messages, received via cellular phone and modem, on a magnified LED. The machine can handle up to 20 pages, and you can store or forward them for printing later on. The $400 prototype is now being tested in two U.S. cities, and it's expected to be widely available this summer. (Popular Science March '95 p.20) * TAKING WORK HOME IS THE AMERICAN WAY The U.S. home computer market is thriving thanks to employees who take work home with them, according to a study by International Data Corp. IDC found 37% of U.S. homes have one or more PCs, versus 30% in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Denmark, 28% in Germany, 24% in Britain, 15% in France, and fewer than 10% in Japan. U.S. consumers spend about 13 hours a week on their home PCs, 80% of which is work-related. (USA Today 3/7/95 B1) * HEADACHE OF THE CENTURY The short-sightedness of computer programmers 30 years ago will result in a major headache for mainframe operators when the clock ticks one second past midnight on Dec. 31, 1999. In an effort to save two bytes of memory, many programmers eliminated the first two digits of the year in software essential to the functions of some of the world's biggest financial and business institutions. The problem can be fixed through recompiling -- translating machine code into programming language, changing the date fields and recompiling into binary code -- but most experts agree that it will take several years to reconfigure all the "bad" data. (Tampa Tribune 3/6/95 B&F3) * PLAINTIFF LOSES RSI LAWSUIT AGAINST IBM AND APPLE A Minnesota jury decided against the claims of a woman who maintained that her use of poorly designed IBM and Apple keyboards had caused her painful "repetitive stress injury" (RSI). The woman recently received a settlement with Apple because Apple's lawyers were guilty of procedural errors. In the Fall of 1995 there should be a WWW browser, people on AppleLink will be finishing their migrating to eWorld, and there will be a Windows client. In 1996, eWorld will have OpenDoc integration. [Page 12, 14] INNOVATION, 6 March 1995 ------------------------ * TECHNOLOGIES FOR TOMORROW The next decade will bring computers that fit in your pocket, insulin pumps that can be inserted in diabetics' bodies, and anti-aging creams that really work, according to Battelle Technology Management Group. The major overall trend in all fields, from medicine to electronics, will be miniaturization. Battelle's top ten for 2005 are: (1) genome mapping -- enabling doctors to predict who will get what disease; (2) supermaterials -- rugged, adaptable building materials for communications, energy, transit; (3) compact energy sources -- powerful, long-lasting batteries and fuel cells; (4) high-definition TV -- digital video for cinema-quality viewing; (5) handheld electronic devices -- phone, fax and computer in the palm of your hand; (6) smart manufacturing systems -- sensor-driven assembly lines; (7) anti-aging products -- creams that really erase wrinkles, genetic tinkering to slow aging; (8) targeted medical treatments -- focused on the ailment only, reduced side effects; (9) hybrid fuel vehicles -- lower emissions, better mileage, higher performance; (10) edutainment -- educational games and computerized simulations for learning. (Business Week 2/6/95 p.6) * UNTANGLING TECHNOBABBLE If you're drowning in alphabet soup, puzzling over acronyms such as ATM, ISDN, PBX, SMDS, and T-1s, take heart. Now there's "Newton's Telecom Dictionary" -- a 1,000-page-plus tome that provides down-to-earth definitions for thousands of terms in telecommunications and related fields such as computer networking. The resource book is priced at $24.95. For more information, call 800-542-7279. (Inc. Feb.'95 p.120) * WHAT IS INNOVATION? Innovation is copyrighted, 1994-95, by NewsScan, Inc., all rights reserved. MacUser, April 1995 ------------------- * PDAS IN THE NEWS MacUser does a recap on the latest and greatest in PDA technology on page 41. Henry Bortman firsts look at the MessagePad 120, the ruggized MP120 by Digital Ocean called Tarpon, and Motorola's two-way wireless Marco. John Rizzo finishes up the page with a look at Sony's MagicLink and General Magic's Magic Cap OS. * APPLE FALLING BEHIND In another article, John Rizzo attempts to make a case that Apple is falling behind in the mobile-computing arena. Specifically that from the Newton-to-PowerBook, Apple is failing to deliver technologically superior products. The IBM ThinkPad is hardware superior to Apple's PB500 series. ARA is not as efficient as PPP, and doesn't run on Windows. Magic Cap is easier to communicate with than the Newton. John isn't too positive that things are going to change soon because many at Apple have "not-invented-here attitude" that will continue to plague innovation. [pp. 112-113] iNews ----- Photonics Corporation has released their infrared wireless networking device COOPERATIVE For Newton. The wireless networking adapter was specifically designed for Apple's MessagePad. Sharp will be releasing, by the end of March, three groupware packages for their Zaurus personal digital assistant. IBM has officially launch its "much-talked-about Butterfly portable computer." Complete details were sketchy, but IBM did recognize up front that it cannot meet the initial demand for the product. BellSouth Cellular and PDA Dimensions have together released DispatchIt, a work order field service application utilizing BellSouth's Simon (cellular phone/PDA). HP has cut prices up to 16% on its OmniBook PC, up to 11% on its Vectra PCs and up to 13% on its NetServer server lines. Taligent, the joint operating system software venture formed by IBM and Apple 3 years ago, says it will ship a commercial product sometime in 1995. Motorola is delivering "rock-bottom prices" on their one-time programmable 68HC05 microcontrollers family. The chip priced at less than $1 per unit if purchased in "large volumes." Sanyo Electric plans a marketing campaign that shows off its Macintosh savvy high-end GVR-S955J VCR that is bundled with VCR editing software. NBC and Reuters have reached an agreement that allows NBC worldwide programming to use any of Reuters news, text wires and financial data.
